The Album

The majority of the tracks on this album have a strong and personal connection with the composer, Paul Neville.

The people, the folklore and geography of this wild, beautiful and rugged part of County Mayo, are all an integral part of these compositions.

The style is not in the “traditional” Irish music genre – although you will hear many phrases and ornamentations which have been influenced by Celtic music.

These compositions are “soundtracks” – that reflect the title and its story.

For example, “Killala Skirmish” – (a battle with the combined Irish and French forces against the British) starts with a whistle (representing the Irish), then a violin (the French) which plays a 15th century processional hymn – “O Come Emmanuel” – and finally the British who are represented by a military version of an old familiar air - “Greensleeves”.
